WHAT'S THE SKINNY?

June 14, 2008- THE NEW YORK POST

WRITTEN BY: RICHARD JOHNSON

MODEL WORLD'S THIN ON IDEAS

THE fashion industry paid big lip service this week to the idea of stopping young models from starving themselves into skinniness - but the designers couldn't come up with any steps that would actually change their sick taste for sickly thin mannequins.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America held an event dubbed "The Beauty of Health: How the Fashion Industry Can Make a Difference" at Milk Studios the other night as part of its awareness program.

Since holding its first health symposium last year, the CFDA has sent letters to designers, agents and stylists reminding them of the importance of health.

IN THE NEWS- CONGRESSMAN'S DESIRE FOR MODELS

New York Congressman Anthony Weiner is hoping to pass a bill that would open up 1,000 new visa slots for foreign models.

June 12, 2008 -- NY POST

By: JENNIFER FERMINO

Seems Anthony Weiner is working hard to increase his dating pool.

The New York Democratic congressman, who has wooed a bevy of beauties from the Big Apple to the Beltway, is pushing a bill that would open up 1,000 new visa slots - for models.

"Anytime you can create jobs in New York, you've got to do it," said his spokesman, John Collins.

"The fashion industry is super-important in New York. It'll make it easier for costume artists, makeup artists and set designers to do shoots in New York."

Black is finally in fashion at Vogue

As seen in: The Independent

By Ian Johnston and Photini Philippidou

Sunday, 27 April 2008

Apart from Naomi Campbell in one Louis Vuitton advertisement this season, it would be difficult to find a single black model in a prominent position in a magazine. Carole White of the Premier Model Agency says she has received casting briefs requesting "no ethnics" and adds: "According to magazines, black models don't sell."

The leading British photographer Nick Knight says: "The fashion industry and the advertising industry are steeped in racism. You just have to look around at the number of black girls you see in ads virtually nil. Among the main fashion brands, they are completely under-represented. It's shocking and atrocious.
